Nordic Walking

What is Nordic Walking?

Nordic Walking uses two specially designed walking poles to work the upper body while walking. Like cross country skiing, from which it was developed, the poles are used by the arms to match each step the person takes. In Mainland Europe over 500,000 people have taken up the exercise to give them a good workout and specifically to loosen off their shoulders and necks. It is a time efficient, low-stress and total body workout.

Why is it better than just walking?

Nordic burns 45% more calories than ordinary walking alone as it:

  • a) Increases your heart rate giving you a greater cardio workout
  • b) Works the arms, shoulders, upper chest and back muscles through a full range of motions, strengthening and lengthening those muscles
  • c) Walking with poles provides those with concerns over hip and knee problems a greater degree of stability and also as the upper body is utilised through the poles the stresss on the knee and hip joints is lessened.

Above all Nordic walking is not only social and fun, it provides exercise out in the fresh air so that rather than pounding the treadmill in the gym - or indeed sitting on that couch! - you can be out walking in a group atmosphere enjoying the wonderful North Norfolk scenery.
